Africa hasn’t been left behind in the production of world-class footballers. They have dazzled the world over the past few decades and their legacies live on in the clubs they have helped on to many silverware. West Africa produced the finest talents of the 1990s. Roger Milla, Jay-Jay Okocha, and Samuel Osei-Kuffour are names that readily come to mind.

10) Seydou Keita (2014 Earnings: $1.4 Million)

The Malian player is a key player in the Mali national team. During his time with Barcelona he earned $4.2m (€3.35m) annually.

In 2012, he signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with Chinese side Dalian Aerbin FC, where he was paid €14 million per year. He returned to Spain after signing with Valencia CF before signing a one-year contract with Serie A club A.S. Roma in June 2014 worth €1 million.

9) Michael Essien (2014 Earnings: $2.9 Million)

Currently playing for AC Milan, the Ghanaian spent five years in France with Lyon and Bastia before becoming the most expensive African player of all time when he signed for Chelsea for £24.4 million in 2005.

His Milan contract will run until 2015 (18 months) and his salary will reportedly be halved, meaning he’ll earn €2.5 million per season.
