Cocoa is Ghana’s main cash crop. It is the nation’s chief agricultural export. Cocoa production occurs in Ghana’s forested areas where rainfall is 1,000-1,500 mm per year. Most cocoa production is carried out by peasant farmers on plots less than three hectares. Ghana’s cocoa yields per hectare are still low by international standards. This is because the cocoa farmers here are not making the best use of technological innovations.
